AgroInsights- The Right Timing

Timing is one of the most important elements.

Jill Herold, Sales Agronomist US West

Winter was that guest that did not know when to leave and could not take a hint this year. I think Spring slept through their alarm or pressed the snooze button and went back to bed. It was probably Summer that unplugged Spring’s alarm clock so it could take over. Mother Nature likes to keep us on our toes. While other places across the country got drought and heat, areas in the Northern and Western U.S. had more rain in places than we’ve seen in a long time, making it a challenge to get into fields. Personally, I have never heard the term “atmospheric river” until this year.

NACHURS innovation in 1946 made it the original 4R nutrient stewardship company. 4R refers to the RIGHT product, RIGHT placement, RIGHT rate, and RIGHT timing. And this year, that last element, timing, was and remains the trickiest target to hit.

Two products that can help with timing and reduce the number of passes across the field come to mind: NACHURS SRN® and NACHURS NocKout®. What makes these two products stand out in a year like this? It is the slow-release nitrogen. The timing of nutrients is critical to crop quality and yield, especially with slow-release nitrogen products. You want to ensure the nitrogen is there when your crop needs it. When picking the right slow-release nitrogen product, consider the correct rate of nitrogen for your crop throughout the season. NACHURS SRN® is a 28-0-0 with 72% of the nitrogen as slow release. NocKout® is our newest product offering for those crops needing an invigorating shot of nitrogen and potassium with a boron boost. NocKout® is a 10-0-10 with 25% slow-release nitrogen and enough boron to enhance crop quality. The potassium in NocKout® is our patented Bio-K®, a fertilizer source that improves soil health, stimulates ecosystem/plant health and resiliency, and simultaneously provides the most plant-available potassium on the market. You can see why this product does a NocKout job.

In regions with excess moisture, using a product like one of these early on will ease the stress of getting back into the field later to make another application. In areas where it is drier, these products can also help due to the fact they are liquid and more readily plant available, unlike the other forms of dry fertilizer, which need certain levels of moisture before they are plant available. “We must use time as a tool, not as a couch.” – John F. Kennedy

We are at the point in the year where things are slowing down around the farm and it is time to reflect on the season to remind ourselves what we learned. Over the last couple of weeks, the District Sales Managers and I have spent some time reflecting on what worked well in the field and the challenges we faced too. Here are the top 5 things we learned from 2024 growing season: #1 Split applying Nitrogen and Sulfur is a practice that should be embraced on a yearly basis when growing corn. Do you remember how the planting season started and what happened in the first 60 days after the planters started rolling? Our field conditions started out dry with some areas of the corn belt showing up on the drought map. Then mother nature blessed us with rain that never stopped in some areas making it difficult to finish planting. Growers that had split applied their Nitrogen and Sulfur were able to avoid nutrient loss from the rain but also apply the nutrients when the crop needed it most. In the end yield was better on split applied nitrogen fields compared to fields that had all the N applied in the fall or spring before planting. #2 For the past 2 seasons in the North region, we have seen the benefits of adding NACHURS Humi-Flex FA to the in-furrow starter fertilizer. NACHURS Humi-Flex FA is our fulvic acid and it is becoming a valuable component in our starter fertilizer for many reasons. We are using it to chelate the nutrients in the starter fertilizer especially phosphorus. Humi-Flex FA also buffers the soil pH to neutral in that nutrient band keeping nutrients available in fields that have less then optimal pH for crop growth. Finally, we use Humi-Flex FA to create a healthy soil microbiome that leads to more root mass and nutrient uptake. #3 Nutrient uptake charts for corn and soybeans have been a great tool for our team to help our customers visualize the crops nutrient needs based on timing during the growing season.
